The results of River's first show at just 6 months and a few days of age was a harbinger of good things to come for her in the show ring. After winning Best in Sweepstakes, she went on to win Winner's Bitch, Best of Winners and Best of Breed at the Belgian Tervuren Club of Southern California specialty show. Shortly after, at the age of eight months, she finished her championship with back to back majors at the Evergreen Belgian Tervuren Club specialties.
As a young adult, River was diagnosed with Valley Fever. This fungal infection is often fatal for dogs who show the advanced symptoms that River experienced.
Thankfully, a good medical team, medication and the wonderful care she received from her co-owners at Mon Ami Tervuren brought her back to robust health.
Eventually, we were able to stop her meds and with agreement of her medical team, River was bred and produced a beautiful litter of nine puppies.
Unfortunately, River later had a relapse of VF and needed to be put back on medication that she will need to take for the rest of her life. With these meds however, her prognosis for a normal life is excellent.
After completing her Bronze Grand Championship, she was retired from the show ring although she may still dabble in Juniors and at Specialty shows.
There was a while when we weren't sure River would pull through her Valley Fever.
